The Biggest Signal Was What Was Missing: Hardware

Despite the sold-out robotics gathering, actual robots were scarce. Data Vendors Filled the Gap as Robot Training Needs Grow

With fewer hardware companies on display, data became a central theme. Business Insider reports that data vendors outnumbered hardware companies, with Uber AI Solutions and Instawork among those pitching tools and networks for collecting or labeling real-world training data. Unlike chatbots trained on internet-scale text, robots need physical-world data to learn how to move and interact. That makes data strategy a competitive issue for robotics companies, not a back-office concern.

China, FCC Restrictions, and Unitree Took Center Stage

Policy and supply-chain pressure added urgency to the hardware conversation. The article says recent FCC restrictions on new foreign-made “advanced robotic devices” became one of the conference’s biggest discussion points, especially because Chinese companies accounted for roughly 90% of global humanoid robot shipments last year. Sebastian Thrun said the regulation was “a bit of a problem” during a surprise keynote, while Multiply Labs CEO Fred Parietti said his company still relies on Chinese humanoids because “there is no alternative right now.” By the end, Chinese humanoids from Unitree became the most visible robots in the room during Robot Fight Night, even if the spectacle thinned as the matches went on.
