Pew Research found that over one-third of web pages published after ChatGPT’s release show signs of being written or substantially edited by AI. In a July 2026 random sample of 10,000 web pages, around 10% showed significant signs of AI authorship, but that figure rose to 35% when Pew focused only on pages published after ChatGPT launched.

The key takeaway: AI-generated or AI-edited writing is no longer a fringe part of the web. It is becoming a measurable share of newly published online content.

How Pew Measured AI Authorship

Pew used the Common Crawl web archive to collect nearly half a million English-language web pages from roughly the past five years, including pages from before and after ChatGPT’s November 2022 release. The organization then used Open Pangram’s technology to estimate how many pages were likely AI-written or heavily AI-edited.

TechCrunch notes that AI-detection tools can misclassify content, so the findings should not be read as perfect page-by-page proof. At web scale, however, the data offers a directional view of how quickly AI-assisted publishing is spreading.

Where AI-Written Pages Appear Most

Pew’s analysis found differences by domain type. TechCrunch reports that .com URLs showed signs of AI authorship at about 10 times the rate of .edu or .gov pages, both of which were around 1% AI-authored.

The study also found a 4.6% AI-authorship rate for .org domains. For readers, researchers, and publishers, the domain split is a useful reminder to assess online content by source, purpose, and verification standards—not just by whether it appears in search results.

Why This Matters for the Web

The findings arrive alongside broader concerns about automation online, including Cloudflare’s report that bot web traffic had overtaken human web traffic. TechCrunch frames the shift bluntly: much of what is being browsed may now be web pages written by bots and read by other bots.

For publishers and businesses, the practical implication is quality control. Clear sourcing, human review, transparent editorial standards, and distinctive expertise may become more important as AI-assisted content becomes more common.
