Crunchbase News reports 29 companies joined The Crunchbase Unicorn Board in August, adding around $63 billion in value, with AI software and semiconductors setting the pace.

A total of 29 companies joined The Crunchbase Unicorn Board in August, adding around $63 billion in value to the board. More than a third of the companies that joined were under 3 years old, pointing to how quickly some best-funded startups are reaching multibillion-dollar valuations.
The month’s top new entrants were XPeng Robotics, valued at more than $6.3 billion; Lumilens, valued at $5.5 billion; and River AI and Source Foundry, each valued at $5 billion.
AI software featured prominently across model training, assistants, agentic and enterprise workflow automation, coding and voice transcription. That spread shows investor interest extending beyond one AI use case into the software layers that support work, development and automation.
Semiconductors was the second-largest sector with five new unicorns. Robotics and financial services each added three, while data centers, security and energy each added two.
The U.S. accounted for 16 of August’s new unicorns, followed by China with four. South Korea, India, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Germany and Turkey each added one.
Nigeria and Indonesia also each added one new unicorn, with Crunchbase noting that both were first new unicorns of the year for their respective countries.
Nine companies exited The Crunchbase Unicorn Board in August, according to Crunchbase data. Three went public, including Unitree Robotics, while six exited through acquisitions.
The acquisition exits included Hugging Face, OpenRouter and Airtable. For readers tracking private-market momentum, the mix of new entries and exits shows both rapid valuation creation and continued movement from private unicorn status into public or acquired outcomes.
The Crunchbase Unicorn Board is a curated list of private companies with post-money valuations of $1 billion or more, based on Crunchbase data. Companies are added when they reach that valuation mark as part of a funding round.
The board does not reflect internal company valuations, such as 409a valuations, and Crunchbase says it does not adjust valuations based on investor writedowns. Funding values are given in U.S. dollars unless otherwise noted.
