Backflip AI has released a CAD-generation model that turns 3D scans and mesh files into editable, parametric CAD models in minutes, aiming to reduce a workflow that typically requires significant CAD expertise.

Backflip AI has released its second AI model for CAD generation. The model converts 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models, a task that normally takes substantial time and deep CAD expertise. Backflip says the process can be reduced to just a few minutes.
The key distinction is that Backflip produces CAD operations such as extrusions and revolutions, rather than only triangle-based surface meshes. That makes the resulting models easier to modify after conversion. For teams digitizing real-world components, editable geometry can be more useful than a static mesh.
According to CEO Greg Mark, most factories have digital models for less than one percent of their parts. The Decoder notes that digitizing components is especially important in automotive and aerospace, where it supports prototyping and new-part design. Backflip’s pitch is aimed at closing that gap by making scan-to-CAD work faster and less dependent on specialized manual effort.
The tool runs as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion. Four reconstructions are free, and paid plans start at $20 per month after that. The startup has been active since December 2024 and is backed by $30 million in funding.
