General Catalyst Pulls Ahead In Larger Fintech Rounds

General Catalyst overtook Y Combinator in Q2 2026 for participation in the most fintech deals of $5 million or more, according to Crunchbase data cited by Crunchbase News. The quarter was also General Catalyst’s busiest since 2021 for investing in rounds of $5 million or above.

In that $5 million-plus category, General Catalyst participated in 12 fintech deals, while Y Combinator and Index Ventures each invested in 11. The shift matters because Y Combinator has routinely ranked as the most active investor in fintech over the past year.

Y Combinator Still Leads Overall Fintech Deal Count

Y Combinator remained the most active fintech investor overall in Q2 2026, participating in 41 deals. General Catalyst ranked far behind on total fintech dealmaking with 13 deals, followed by Coinbase Ventures with 12, Index Ventures with 11 and FJ Labs with 10.

The split highlights an important distinction for readers: leadership changes depending on whether the metric is total activity or participation in larger rounds. For founders and market watchers, that means investor rankings should be read by stage and round size, not just headline deal count.

Fintech Funding Rose In H1, But Slipped From H2 2025

Fintech startups raised $28.6 billion globally in the first half of 2026, up 22.7% from the first half of 2025, according to Crunchbase data cited in the article. That total was down 17.3% from the $34.6 billion raised in the second half of 2025.

Crunchbase News noted that H2 2025 was the strongest six-month funding period for fintech startups since the second half of 2022. The takeaway: fintech funding improved year over year, but the comparison to the prior half-year shows momentum was not uniformly accelerating.

Megarounds Were Led By Private Equity-Linked Investors

For fintech megarounds of $100 million or more, private equity firms again topped the list of lead or co-lead investors. Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Iconiq Capital, GIC, Centerbridge Partners and Prosus were cited among the top lead or co-lead investors in Q2 2026.

The largest Q2 rounds included Ramp’s $750 million Series F, Ebury’s $748 million private equity financing, KreditBee’s $220 million Series E and Alan’s $545 million Series G. These deals show large fintech checks going to companies across expense management, payments and foreign exchange, consumer lending and insurtech.

Seed And Post-Seed Rankings Tell Different Stories

At seed, Y Combinator again topped the fintech investor list by a wide margin, with 33 fintech deals. Rebel Fund followed with seven seed-stage investments, and Antler had six.

For post-seed rounds, the investor mix shifted: General Catalyst led or co-led five deals. TCV, SMBC Asia Rising Fund, Portage Ventures, Index Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners and Accel each tied with three investments.
