Google is testing a Buy button for select Flipkart products in Gemini and AI Mode in India, with a broader rollout planned for later in October.

Google has started testing a way for shoppers in India to buy products from Walmart-owned Flipkart directly through Gemini and Google’s AI Mode. In the test, some users see a “Buy” button on select Flipkart product listings, which opens a Flipkart checkout flow without leaving the AI interface. The test is limited to some users and a small selection of products.
The early test includes select product categories such as smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories, according to the TechCrunch report. Other users still see regular Flipkart product listings in Gemini and AI Mode without a direct buying option. A broader rollout is planned for later in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season.
The test shows Google moving its AI services beyond product discovery and recommendations toward transactions. Google has separately introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard designed to help AI agents interact with retailers across the shopping journey, including checkout. The Flipkart test appears different from the Google-hosted checkout experience previously demonstrated, and it is not clear what technology powers it.
India is described in the report as the world’s second-largest internet market, with more than a billion internet subscribers. Flipkart and Amazon compete fiercely for online shoppers there, especially during the festive season when major sales and promotions intensify. In the experience seen by TechCrunch, Amazon listings appeared alongside Flipkart products but did not offer the option to purchase directly through the AI interface.
