Google said its AI-powered Googlebook is now available for preorder at $899 after first unveiling the device in May. The laptop is positioned as a step up from traditional Chromebooks and runs Android OS with a desktop version of Chrome plus familiar ChromeOS elements.

Preorders are open through the Google Store, Best Buy and other retailers. Devices are slated to hit shelves on October 4 in the U.S., followed by October 5 in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany and Australia.

Gemini Moves From App to Desktop Workflow

The core pitch is that Gemini is built into the laptop experience rather than limited to a browser tab or separate desktop app. Google is tying AI to the cursor, dictation, widgets and other everyday parts of desktop computing.

The AI pointer, called Magic Cursor, lets users highlight webpage content, check whether a hovered email may be suspicious, or select images and ask Gemini to work with them. TechCrunch notes that the concept resembles Android’s Circle to Search, which connects gestures like circling, highlighting or tapping to Google Search and AI.

Rambler and AI Widgets Are Useful, but the Upgrade Case Is the Test

Googlebook includes Rambler, an AI-enhanced dictation feature that turns messy, rambling brain dumps into more readable text. TechCrunch describes Rambler as one of the stronger AI features in the update because it addresses a practical writing need.

Other features include vibe-coded widgets, Gemini Spark and Gemini Live. The key question for buyers is whether these AI features feel essential enough to justify new hardware, especially when some AI tools can already run through apps, browsers or agents.

What Buyers Get: AI Pro, Long Updates and Premium Hardware Options

The $899 Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, which comes with 5TB of cloud storage, Gemini Advanced tools, and 3 months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and more. Google also said the devices will receive regular updates for up to 10 years.

Flagship models are being built by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo using materials such as aluminum, magnesium alloy and carbon fiber. Listed hardware features include up to 2.8K OLED displays, haptic glass trackpads, backlit keyboards, Intel and Qualcomm processors with dedicated NPUs, and up to 14 hours of battery life.

Why This Matters for Chromebooks and Schools

Beyond early adopters, Googlebook may point to Google’s longer-term strategy for customers currently using Chromebooks. TechCrunch highlights the K-12 market as a major factor, citing Google’s statement that there are somewhere around 50 million Chromebooks in schools used by students and educators.

Google previously told TechCrunch that current Chromebooks would continue to be supported, while many would become eligible to transition to the new Googlebook experience in the future. That makes Googlebook less just a single laptop launch and more a test of how aggressively Google can move existing laptop users toward Gemini.
