Business Insider reports that departing Google chief scientist Jeff Dean has been in talks for $1 billion in financing at around a $10 billion valuation for his new AI startup, Discovery Loop.
Jeff Dean, who spent 27 years helping build Google, has been in discussions for $1 billion in financing at a valuation of around $10 billion for his new AI startup, Discovery Loop, people familiar with the matter told Business Insider.
The reported talks put Discovery Loop among the most closely watched AI startups in Silicon Valley following Dean’s departure from Google. Business Insider noted that details of the round could change, and a representative for Dean declined to comment.
Dean has described Discovery Loop on X as a public benefit corporation “whose mission is to automate machine learning, science, and engineering to accelerate discoveries and progress.”
The company aims to work on hard science and engineering problems through the “parallel execution of thousands of experiments.” That positioning gives readers the clearest lens for understanding the startup: not just another AI lab, but one framed around automating discovery itself.
A Discovery Loop press release from August 5 said the company’s initial funding round is being led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital.
Alphabet is a founding investor and cloud partner, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The founding team includes Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, bringing experience tied to distributed computing, Google Brain, deep learning, large-scale neural networks, Google DeepMind, sequence modeling, and reinforcement learning.
Discovery Loop is part of a broader pattern of Google and DeepMind talent leaving to raise large sums for AI startups. Business Insider cited examples including David Silver’s Ineffable Intelligence, Reflection AI, Periodic Labs, and Sakana AI.
The takeaway is simple: investors are placing unusually large bets on elite AI researchers and engineers with records at major labs. For founders, that underscores how technical credibility and team pedigree can shape fundraising momentum in the current AI market.
