The Marine Corps is testing whether helicopters can act as mobile control hubs for low-cost drones during maritime missions. In a recent exercise off the coast of California, Marines launched and controlled small first-person-view drones from UH-1Y Venom and AH-1Z Viper helicopters while supporting a special operations visit, board, search, and seizure drill.

The goal was to see whether drones could scout a ship more closely before troops climbed aboard, helping reduce surprises during a dangerous mission set.

Why drones matter before a boarding team moves in

The service said the experiment showed helicopter formations could “scout, target, and provide overwatch from a safe distance” during maritime operations. That matters because boarding and seizing ships can be among the military’s riskiest missions.

According to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, using FPV drones “as a remote extension of the helicopter’s own sensors” helped make “an intrinsically dangerous mission more controlled by reducing unknowns.”

The drone: Neros Archer FPV aircraft

Marines used small Neros Archer first-person-view drones, described as the primary drone used by the Corps. Each costs a few thousand dollars, and the military expects to buy many more.

The article notes that the Army is seeking as many as one million Neros Archer drones over the next two years, underscoring the growing role of cheap, small drones across US military planning.

The bigger concept: airborne drone motherships

The exercise also tested whether helicopters could serve as airborne motherships for smaller drones. That idea is already appearing on modern battlefields, including in Ukraine, where Ukrainian and Russian forces have paired larger drones with smaller FPV aircraft and interceptor drones.

Using larger platforms to carry smaller drones can extend their reach by miles while keeping operators farther from danger. The drill followed an earlier Marine Corps exercise in May that practiced passing control from ground units to helicopters and launching drones from helicopters.
