Paris-based generative AI startup Mistral AI said it raised $3.5 billion in Series D funding at a valuation of more than $24 billion. Samsung Electronics led the round, with participation from co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity.

The round nearly doubles Mistral’s prior valuation of $13.7 billion from its $2 billion Series C nearly one year earlier. Since its 2023 inception, Mistral has raised $7.5 billion.

Why the Valuation Matters

The new raise helps Mistral retain its position as Europe’s most highly valued foundation model company. Crunchbase News notes that private frontier labs valued above $20 billion are otherwise based in the U.S. and China, with China’s ByteDance also building its own model.

For readers tracking AI infrastructure and venture markets, the key signal is concentration: large AI rounds continue to cluster around companies building frontier models, enterprise AI tools and the infrastructure needed to support them.

Where the Capital Is Going

Mistral said the funding will significantly expand its frontier research, infrastructure, commercial growth and international footprint. The company operates across 20 countries and counts more than 125 global enterprises as customers, including Airbus, ASML, BMW and HSBC.

Its models support tasks such as generating text, writing code and analyzing documents. Mistral competes with U.S. companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, while emphasizing business control through models customers can customize and run on their own systems rather than relying entirely on a third-party cloud provider.

Europe’s AI Funding Momentum

The round lands during a stronger period for European venture funding. Crunchbase data cited in the article shows Europe posted its strongest venture funding quarter in four years in Q2, with Europe-based startups raising $24 billion.

Mistral’s latest round eclipses its prior $2 billion Series C, which was described at the time as the largest venture round ever raised by a European AI company. Other large European AI-related deals this year include Isomorphic Labs’ $2.1 billion Series B and Nscale’s $2 billion Series C at a $14.6 billion valuation.
