TechCrunch reports that French AI lab Mistral AI raised €3 billion at a valuation above €21 billion, with Samsung Electronics leading a Series D round focused on compute, infrastructure, growth, and sovereign AI strategy.

Mistral AI said it raised €3 billion, about $3.58 billion, at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, about $24.39 billion. The Series D was led by Samsung Electronics, with the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity joining as co-leads.
The company described the round as the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. The financing confirms earlier reporting that Mistral was seeking a major new round.
Mistral said it will use the funding to scale compute capacity, build infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth, and expand internationally. That focus points to a broader play than simply building consumer-facing AI products.
The company says its goal is not to build a European ChatGPT, even as it continues to position itself as an AI lab. Its stated emphasis is on infrastructure, products, frontier research, and sovereignty.
The funding lands as governments and companies look for more control over where AI systems run, which models they use, and how their data is processed. Mistral has introduced tools that let customers choose the regions where AI queries are processed and has started hosting third-party open-weight AI models.
The company has also pushed to build 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030. TechCrunch frames the strategy as a response to concerns in Europe and elsewhere about dependence on U.S. technology amid intensifying AI politics and regulation.
Samsung’s entry onto Mistral’s cap table has the blessing of French authorities, and French president Emmanuel Macron said the round reflected France and South Korea’s goal of “building a third way in AI.” Mistral now operates in 20 countries and focuses its go-to-market strategy on helping governments and corporations use AI while preserving control.
The company still works with U.S. players, including Microsoft, and the Series D included American investors such as a16z, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Advent, and BlackRock. With Luxembourg also joining as a new backer and European investors doubling down, Mistral’s investor base remains international.
