NATO is exploring AI-assisted drone operations as part of a wider effort to strengthen its defenses. The reported aim is not full autonomy: machines could help pilot drones, while human operators would decide what targets are engaged.
US Army Maj. Ben Schiff described the approach as automating “the most boring parts of flying,” including drones loitering above the battlefield, so operators can focus on targeting and engagement decisions.
The AI-drone concept would fit into NATO’s Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative, a digital battlespace network designed to track threats along borders with Russia and Belarus. The initiative is described as using thousands of drones, sensors, satellites, and artificial intelligence to detect potential breaches of allied territory and help repel attacks.
Conventional forces such as tanks, fighter jets, and artillery would remain the backbone, while the new network is intended to improve warning, coordination, and response.
The initiative is meant to move NATO beyond a linear “kill chain” toward a decentralized “kill web,” where sensor data can be passed quickly to weapons systems and operators. The system is described as a “data highway” that lets nations plug existing systems into a shared environment without custom integrations.
Maj. Matt Blubaugh, a spokesperson for US Army Europe and Africa, said the value of a drone, sensor, or other capability depends on how well it integrates into the broader operational ecosystem.
NATO officials are drawing lessons from Ukraine’s battlefield experience, where AI is increasingly being used to support drone navigation, decision-making, terminal guidance, and precision. Andrii Hrytseniuk of Brave1 told Business Insider that more than 200 local companies were developing AI-based components for drones, missiles, radars, and other systems.
Ukrainian defense firms and commanders still emphasize human control. Wild Hornets said AI may be integrated into target detection, identification, and terminal guidance, but humans would still decide what to strike.
