OpenAI’s upcoming Astra model is reportedly using recurrent depth, also called opaque recurrence, prompting warnings from AI safety experts about chain-of-thought monitorability.

OpenAI’s new Astra model will use a reasoning technique called “recurrent depth,” according to the TechCrunch article, citing reporting from The Information. The technique is also referred to as “opaque recurrence” and allows the model to operate outside the sequential thinking that characterizes most reasoning models.
The central concern is visibility: if a model’s reasoning becomes less sequential, its chain of thought may become harder to monitor. That matters because chain-of-thought records are used as a practical tool for examining model behavior, even though they are not a perfect representation of how a model reasons.
AI safety experts quoted in the article warn that opaque recurrence could weaken chain-of-thought monitorability if pushed further. Redwood CEO Buck Shlegeris wrote that he was “extremely concerned” by the reporting and said heavier use could “totally” destroy chain-of-thought monitorability.
Longtime AI safety advocate Zvi Mowshowitz wrote that more intensive use of such techniques would probably damage monitorability and suggested laws might be needed to prevent a “race to the bottom” among AI labs. The concern is not only Astra’s reported implementation, but whether the technique becomes more common and more powerful across future models.
Under normal circumstances, a reasoning model’s chain of thought provides sequential steps as the model attempts to solve a problem. In opaque recurrence, the model processes the same query several times in a loop, leaving fewer legible traces and potentially sidestepping a conventional chain-of-thought record.
The article notes that chain-of-thought records were important in examining OpenAI’s recent rogue agent activity. If similar records become less legible, researchers and safety teams may have fewer tools for understanding misbehavior or misalignment.
The article says Astra’s use of the technique appears limited, and the model’s chain of thought is still expected to be legible. OpenAI also pushed back against suggestions that it would shift to “neuralese,” and the company has announced plans for extensive chain-of-thought monitoring systems as part of its forward-looking safety plans.
OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki wrote that OpenAI has worked to preserve and use chain-of-thought monitoring since its first reasoning models and called it a core goal of the current research program. The open question is whether opaque reasoning remains limited or scales into systems where reasoning happens largely outside visible channels.
