Oratomic said it raised $300 million in a Series A round co-led by ARCH Venture Partners, Spark Capital, and Khosla Ventures. The round also included participation from Bezos Expeditions, Index Ventures, General Catalyst, Lowercarbon Capital, Bain Capital, and others.
The financing places Oratomic among the startups trying to build commercially viable quantum computers capable of outperforming current systems. For readers tracking deep tech, the key signal is investor appetite for hardware-heavy quantum approaches despite the field’s technical uncertainty.
Founded by Caltech physicists, Oratomic uses lasers as optical tweezers to hold individual atoms in place as the basis for its quantum computer. The company says its researchers found a way to correct errors using significantly fewer qubits than previously thought possible.
Error correction matters because quantum computers are sensitive to noise, and making them useful depends on controlling those errors. Oratomic’s pitch centers on reducing the scale needed to reach a practical machine.
Oratomic CEO Dolev Bluvstein told TechCrunch the company needs roughly 10,000 to 20,000 qubits to build a useful computer. He also said Oratomic has experimentally demonstrated the core components required for that computer at a slightly smaller scale.
The company does not plan to develop or sell noisy intermediate-scale quantum systems, known as NISQ. Instead, it is aiming directly at a utility-scale quantum computer by the end of the decade.
