A Siberian anti-plague lab employee’s death has prompted concern and conflicting reports, but the WHO says the broader regional risk is very low.
Daria Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia, died on October 2 after being hospitalized days earlier for pneumonia in Shelekhov. Russian officials are trying to calm global concern after fears grew around a possible pneumonic plague case. The World Health Organization told the Associated Press on October 6 that the plague presents a “very low” risk to the broader European region.
There is no confirmed plague outbreak so far, and Shipilova’s cause of death remains uncertain. Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s public health watchdog, said testing found “no microorganisms associated with the patient’s professional activities” and that she died from “pneumonia of unknown etiology.” Some independent and exiled Russian publications have reported unconfirmed claims about a possible lab exposure, but Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed those accounts.
Rospotrebnadzor said authorities identified and monitored 197 people who had contact with Shipilova. According to the agency, two people tested positive for COVID-19 and two others for rhinovirus, while everyone else tested showed no signs of other infectious agents. A medical expert cited by Business Insider said the current risk is nowhere near a COVID-19-level threat, but also said the situation needs more clarity.
Pneumonic plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, a bacterial infection that can progress very quickly. Business Insider reported that patients can sometimes develop symptoms in under 24 hours, and the illness can be fatal if untreated. When caught early, treatment is straightforward: a course of antibiotics.
The WHO says the risk outside Russia is “very low,” and Business Insider reported there is no evidence of cases in the US or beyond the Irkutsk area. The uncertainty is being driven by conflicting reports, vague official statements, and questions about what testing was performed. The clearest takeaway for now is that public health officials and experts are watching for more information, not evidence of a wider outbreak.
