A $1.5B Push to Redefine Long-Haul Travel

Singapore Airlines is investing over S$2 billion, or around $1.5 billion, to overhaul its long-haul experience across all cabins, from economy to first class. The plan includes redesigned cabin products plus updates to in-flight entertainment, Starlink WiFi, food and beverage offerings, amenity kits, and more. The airline was named the world’s best airline by Skytrax in 2026, according to the provided Business Insider article, and is using the makeover to push further into comfort, personalization, and premium service.

Rollout Starts in the Second Half of 2027

The new seats and cabin products are expected to be introduced on select Boeing and Airbus jets starting in the second half of 2027. Future Boeing 777-9s are set to feature all four redesigned cabins, though the aircraft are still awaiting Federal Aviation Administration certification. The Airbus A350-900 and A350-900ULR will get the new business class, while the A350-900ULR will also add first class for the first time.

What Changes Across Economy, Premium Economy, and Business Class

Economy seats will feature 31 to 32 inches of legroom, up to 6 inches of recline, a four-way adjustable headrest, and additional storage options including a cupholder, coat hook, and under-monitor seatback pockets. Premium economy will increase legroom from 38 inches to 40 inches and recline from 8 inches to 9 inches, while adding storage such as a water bottle holder, an under-armrest compartment, and a cocktail tray. Business class is getting a redesigned look co-designed by Designworks, a BMW Group company, and will include privacy doors for the first time.

Why the Upgrade Matters for Travelers

The overhaul reflects a broader airline focus on premium offerings that customers are willing to pay more for. Singapore Airlines’ chief commercial officer Lee Lik Hsin said premium-class demand is rising beyond corporate travel, including leisure, family, and student travel. For passengers, the clearest takeaway is that the airline is targeting both everyday comfort and higher-end privacy across long-haul cabins.
