Foodborne illness headlines are everywhere this summer. Here’s what’s driving the concern.
Taylor Farms is voluntarily recalling more than a dozen prepared food items, including salsa and guacamole, because of potential Salmonella contamination tied to jalapeños.
Taylor Farms said it is voluntarily recalling more than a dozen prepared food items containing jalapeños from retail stores because of Salmonella concerns. The affected products include multiple salsas and guacamoles, along with ready-to-eat items such as rice and bean burrito, spicy roast beef sandwich, and fiesta-style salad shrimp. The key detail for shoppers is the jalapeño ingredient: the recall centers on prepared foods that contain it.
The company said the recall followed notice that Coast Citrus Distributors was pulling back fresh jalapeños because of potential Salmonella contamination. Business Insider reported that both companies source jalapeños from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, identified as the potential source in the outbreak. Taylor Farms said it is no longer sourcing products from that farmer and will fill orders from alternative suppliers.
Taylor Farms said it is not aware of any reported illnesses linked to its jalapeño-containing products to date. Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause painful food poisoning, making recalls involving ready-to-eat foods especially important for consumers to notice quickly. Business Insider said Taylor Farms did not immediately respond to its request for comment.
The recall comes weeks after Taylor Farms was linked to a cyclosporiasis outbreak. Last month, the US Food and Drug Administration linked iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to a multi-state cyclosporiasis outbreak, but later said the Taylor Farms lettuce sample initially reported positive for cyclospora was determined to be a false positive. The latest recall is separate and centers on jalapeño-containing prepared foods and potential Salmonella contamination.
