Ukraine’s soldiers want drones and robots that can handle more flying and driving tasks independently, allowing one operator to oversee multiple systems instead of manually controlling each one. The shift is meant to reduce operator workload and help pilots focus on higher-value tasks such as target confirmation and swarm control.

Business Insider reports that Ukrainian defense companies are increasingly automating routine tasks while keeping humans responsible for decisions about using force. The trend reflects how central aerial drones and ground robots have become in Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s larger military.

Soldier Feedback Is Shaping New Drone Software

Frontline Robotics executive Mykyta Rozhkov told Business Insider that his company’s innovation has come from soldiers asking how one person could control different robots or make UAV pilot shifts easier. The company responded with software that lets drones handle more flight tasks, including traveling to and from an area of interest with minimal input.

Rozhkov said a newer drone version includes an autonomy layer that can take it to an area of interest and bring it back “with basically one button.” Frontline’s Linza 3.0 drone and Zoom reconnaissance drone also add autonomy or AI navigation to help operate when GPS is unavailable or satellite signals are lost.

Electronic Warfare Is Driving AI Navigation

Russian electronic warfare is a major reason Ukrainian systems need more onboard capability. The article says newer systems can increasingly navigate, return to base, and help identify targets independently, including when connections or satellite navigation are disrupted.

Ukraine’s defense ministry said units were using more than 70 systems powered by AI and computer vision technologies to strike enemy targets. It also said the aim is to eventually have 100% of frontline drones equipped with computer vision and AI capabilities.

The Key Limit: Humans Still Make the Final Call

Despite the push toward autonomy, the article says technical and ethical limits remain. Some companies and experts describe much of what is called autonomy as advanced automation rather than independently acting AI.

Ukraine says it has not removed human oversight: its defense ministry said the final decision on target selection and engagement is made by a human operator. The practical takeaway is that Ukraine is trying to use autonomy to reduce risk, increase capacity, and keep soldiers farther from the danger zone without fully handing lethal decisions to machines.
