Ukraine’s military said it launched a fully robotic amphibious assault by using a naval drone to carry a ground robot into Russian-occupied territory. The 123rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade said the mission took place on the Kinburn Spit, at the end of Ukraine’s Kinburn Peninsula west of Kherson. The brigade described it as the first known combat mission of this format in the world.
The naval drone was remotely guided across the Black Sea to a position behind Russian lines, according to the report. Once it reached the coast, it deployed an uncrewed ground vehicle armed with a mounted machine gun. Footage shared by the brigade showed the ground robot firing at an unidentified target, but Ukraine did not identify the platforms, capabilities, or mission objective.
Ukrainian officials have called the Kinburn area a key strategic foothold for Russian forces seeking to restrict maritime access to the Black Sea.
