Flydubai FZ1073: What We Know About the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv Flight Emergency

Passengers and crew helped stop an alleged cockpit attack on Flydubai Flight FZ1073 after the jet dropped 17,000 feet and diverted to Saudi Arabia, according to Business Insider.

A Dubai-to-Tel Aviv Flight Became a Midair Emergency

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an alleged cockpit attack forced the aircraft to divert to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Business Insider reported that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed another and attempted to crash the plane. The flight later continued passengers to their original destination in Israel using replacement aircraft, according to Flydubai.

Passengers and Crew Helped Regain Control

Passenger Yaniv Hayun told Netanyahu that he grabbed the attacker, pulled him out of the cockpit, and helped level the aircraft by pulling back on the yoke. He said other passengers, crew members, and pilots on board helped stop the attack and stabilize the jet. Netanyahu praised the passengers as heroes and identified the injured captain as Smit Machchhar, saying he helped enable others to overpower the attacker.

Flight Data Showed a Sharp Drop and Emergency Codes

Flight-tracking data cited by Business Insider showed the jet dropped from 34,000 feet to 17,000 feet above sea level in about two minutes. The aircraft later squawked 7700, a general emergency code, before changing to 7500, which indicates unlawful interference. Flydubai said an altercation occurred in the flight deck and that all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for.

The Investigation Is Still Developing

Flydubai said the motives and underlying reasons for the event were unknown and subject to a formal investigation. Cluster2, which operates Tabuk’s airport, said both pilots were injured and taken to a hospital, without detailing the injuries. The key takeaway for readers: the immediate danger ended with the aircraft secured, but official findings on motive and sequence of events are still pending.
