The Department of Defense is expanding GenAI.mil with customized versions of ChatGPT and Grok, joining Google Gemini on a secure portal built for government AI use.

The Pentagon has launched ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, giving civilian and military personnel access to generative AI tools tailored to “warfighter needs.” The tools are now part of GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense’s centralized portal for AI tools. They join Google Gemini, which was available when the portal first launched.
GenAI.mil is designed to let Department of Defense employees use commercial frontier AI models without routing sensitive government data through ordinary consumer channels. The military version is exempt from the kind of data collection that can be difficult to avoid in consumer tech products. According to the Department of Defense, the portal has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users out of 3 million personnel.
ChatGPT Mil, developed through OpenAI for Government, is expected to feel familiar to commercial ChatGPT users and focus on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. The tool will support routine, unclassified, document-heavy work including administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy. Grok for Government was framed more broadly by the Pentagon, including potential use across market research analysis for acquisition professionals and supply-chain management for logisticians.
The additions fit into the Pentagon’s wider effort to accelerate work with AI while maintaining security controls. TechCrunch notes the move also highlights the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model amid a dispute involving safety guardrails and a supply-chain risk designation that Anthropic is fighting in court. The Pentagon has also struck AI-related deals with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
