Terra Industries announced an additional $18 million in funding, bringing its seed round to $52 million. Investors in the round include Joe Lonsdale’s 8VC, Silent Ventures and Nova Global.

The raise positions Terra as a notable African defense tech startup at a time when autonomous systems and localized defense infrastructure are drawing investor attention.

What Terra is building

Since launching in 2024, Terra has worked on autonomous systems and defense infrastructure, including drones and mine-detecting combat vehicles. The company says it is on track to book $100 million in contracts, including at least one federal contract.

Terra also says it expects to generate revenue in the tens of millions of dollars by year-end.

Why the Global South focus matters

Terra says its current competition includes any defense company that has won government contracts, especially suppliers from Turkey, China and the West. TechCrunch notes that many African countries depend on the West, Russia or China for security intelligence.

That reliance can leave defense supply chains fragmented and easier to destabilize. Terra says it wants to address that gap by becoming a major player in equipping countries with military and critical defense infrastructure.

Where the new capital goes next

The startup plans to use the fresh capital to expand manufacturing across the Global South, open a London office, hire more staff and accelerate product deployment. It also hopes to open an office in San Francisco and build a presence in Washington, D.C.

Those U.S. moves are aimed at improving access to capital and partnerships, according to the company.
