The Exploration Company has raised $450 million in a Series C round to advance reusable spacecraft and a European alternative to SpaceX, according to TechCrunch.

The Exploration Company, known as TEC, has raised $450 million in what it describes as the largest-ever Series C by a European space company. The company is building reusable spacecraft at a time when demand for orbital access is growing and space infrastructure is under pressure. TechCrunch frames the round as part of a broader push to create alternatives to SpaceX’s dominant role in low-Earth-orbit launches.
The funding reflects investor interest on both sides of the Atlantic in companies developing reusable space systems. TEC operates out of Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain and Italy, giving it a strong European positioning as governments and companies look at space access as a strategic priority. The company’s stated ambition is to help lay the foundation for a reusable European heavy-lift launcher that could offer an affordable alternative to SpaceX.
TEC’s immediate focus is Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to carry cargo and eventually people. The company intends for Nyx to dock with the soon-to-be-retired International Space Station and return safely to Earth by November 2028. According to TechCrunch, the Series C funding is also expected to support Storm, a rocket engine program, while CEO Hélène Huby said more funding would be needed to build a launch pad and the rocket itself.
Atomico said 10 Nyx missions are booked, with more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments. Some commitments come from institutional partners, including the European Space Agency and NASA. The Series C was co-led by Atomico, the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and Bessemer Venture Partners, with Bessemer partner Alex Ferrara joining TEC’s board of directors.
TEC’s raise comes as Europe’s commercial space ecosystem gains momentum and as other companies pursue reusable rockets, launch vehicles and space infrastructure. The company’s progress drew praise from French president Emmanuel Macron and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, according to TechCrunch. The key takeaway: Europe is trying to expand its options for access to orbit, but the timeline for challenging SpaceX remains ambitious and capital-intensive.
