Ukraine says its forces carried out 16,676 ground drone missions in June, more than double January’s tally, as drones take on dangerous logistics and evacuation work near the front.
Ukraine said its forces conducted 16,676 ground drone missions in June, up from 7,511 in January. The defense ministry said the June figure was 18.6% higher than May and 122% higher than January. Across the first six months of 2026, Ukraine reported more than 66,300 mission tasks carried out with ground drones.
The reported missions include logistics and evacuation tasks, with Ukraine saying ground drones are replacing military personnel in difficult areas of the front. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said UGV units are taking over dangerous work “from logistics to medical evacuation.” Some ground drones are also fitted with small arms, but the recent emphasis described is on moving critical supplies.
Business Insider reports that enemy surveillance and attack drones are creating “kill zones” that can stretch 50 km into Ukrainian-held territory in some areas. These zones put human soldiers and armored vehicles at high risk of being spotted and attacked. Ukraine’s response includes sending wheeled or tracked ground drones with food, ammunition, and water along battlefield supply routes.
Ukraine’s defense ministry said it plans to eventually “transfer up to 100% of frontline logistics to robotic solutions.” Its forces have contracted more than 22,000 new ground drones for delivery to the front lines this year. The ministry also said it expects to procure additional systems for 2026.
