Ukraine is testing homemade, remotely controlled off-road buggies for the first time as it looks for reliable ways to supply troops this winter. Brave1, the Ukrainian state-backed innovation platform, said closed trials were held with local manufacturers and a special unit under Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence agency. The goal is to see whether optionally manned vehicles can perform under battlefield conditions.
Brave1 said Ukraine’s military needs affordable, fast, highly mobile vehicles that can operate with a driver or remotely as winter approaches. Ground robots have become important for Ukrainian logistics and for reducing soldiers’ exposure on dangerous front-line missions. But Brave1 said many robots have limitations, including slow movement and potential trouble in snow and mud.
Ukrainian forces have long used foreign-made buggies for infantry assaults, rapid movement, specialized missions, and logistics. These lightweight four-wheel vehicles are fast and capable on rough terrain, but they lack external protection. Brave1 said some buggies have also faced high costs, limited remote-control capabilities, and difficulty meeting battlefield demands.
Brave1 said its goal is to build a Ukrainian buggy market and said it has provided grants to more than half the developments available in the country. After the trials, manufacturers are adjusting their vehicles based on feedback. The next step is working with Ukraine’s defense ministry to scale battlefield deployment, part of a broader push toward robots, drones, and autonomous systems against Russia.
