Business Insider reports that Ukraine’s elite special operators are carrying out more infiltration missions as drone-saturated front-line areas make larger maneuvers increasingly difficult.
Elite Ukrainian special operators are carrying out more infiltration missions into Russian-held territory as the drone-infested kill zone grows. These operations typically involve small groups sneaking past enemy lines to take key positions or conduct ambushes, raids, and assaults. An operator in Ukraine’s 4th Ranger Regiment told Business Insider that the number of missions has increased over the past year.
Ukrainian soldiers and officials describe the front line as a kill zone where drones can quickly attack troops and vehicles. Business Insider reported that drones are responsible for roughly 90% of battlefield strikes, and that the kill zone often extends about 10 to 20 kilometers in either direction from the line of contact. As that zone expands, commanders are being forced to adjust tactics and rely on smaller, more deliberate movements.
The same battlefield pressures are also showing up on the Russian side, according to the report. The Ukrainian operator said Russian troops are using similar tactics, infiltrating in groups of two to four soldiers and sometimes reaching Ukrainian rear areas. That creates another task for Ukrainian special operators: respond to breaches and eliminate the threat.
To manage the higher tempo, Ukrainian special operators rotate teams so soldiers can rest, train, and prepare. The expanding kill zone has also pushed them to use ground robots for front-line logistics and casualty evacuation, work that has become too dangerous for soldiers under heavy drone presence. The core takeaway is adaptation: smaller teams, targeted missions, and more unmanned support are becoming central to operating near the front.
