Mistral AI has released Mistral Large 4, a new large multimodal model aimed at competing with both closed American models and open models often made in China. The TechCrunch report frames the launch as part of Europe’s continued push to stay relevant in frontier AI. Mistral is presenting ML4 as an alternative path in a market increasingly split between closed systems and open-weight approaches.
ML4 is nicknamed “Le Chonk” in reference to its 1 trillion parameters. For now, the model is accessible through a public guardrail endpoint, and Mistral plans to make its weights available in three weeks after safety testing is complete. Mistral VP Science Pierre Stock told TechCrunch the company will work with trusted partners and governments to ensure the open source weights can be used to defend, not perform malicious attacks.
Mistral says ML4 was trained entirely on its own compute using 4,000 Nvidia GPUs. Stock told TechCrunch that this is “two to three times less” than Chinese competitors and significantly less than closed-source competitors. Benchmark results are still pending, so the model’s performance claims remain to be tested publicly.
According to Stock, ML4’s optimized use cases include cybersecurity, finance, and chip design. Those areas align with enterprise and institutional demand, which TechCrunch describes as part of Mistral’s core audience. The model could also reinforce Mistral’s argument that it remains a frontier lab, not merely an inference provider.
